Tips For Fixing A Leaking Roof

Its not exactly easy to fix a leaky roof; they’re usually extremely hard to find and if that wasn’t enough, they’re usually in multiple places. After finding the leak, it may be even more difficult to know how to proceed.

Find The Leak: This sounds easier then said; because most people won’t find it difficult to look for the leak until they actually start searching. The wet spot on your wall is not where the leak has originated, but it is damaged. Leaks usually originate where there has been some missing or damaged shingles, or a loose nail. Water can also find its way from poorly constructed air vents, chimneys, and sky lights. The water will normally flow around the roof until it finds a place it can begin to leak into the home.

The best way to to find the leak is to go at it during the day. This way you’ll have plenty of light and time. You should use a flash light and work backwards from the evident area. While looking for the leak keep an eye out for discoloration and mold. Both are signs of water damaged.

If you’re still struggling to find the origination of the leak, turn on the light. Allowing the light to penetrate the the roof will give you a better idea of where the hole could possibly be. Now this may be extremely difficult and time consuming for shingle roofs, but for other it should be quick and painless. Whatever you roof may be, this technique will guarantee you results. Once you’ve found where the leaking has occurred you can patch it up and get on with your life.

While its ok to fix things yourself, the best option might be to call a professional. They can fix it to the point where it’ll last longer. They may also be able to spot damage in other areas that were previously unknown to you. Better safe then sorry.
