Tips to Increase your Website Traffic and PR using Directories
A directory is a collection of web sites, usually organized in categories (and often categories within categories (subcategories)), that users can use to find interesting web sites within specific domains (So a directory allow internet surfers to browser the web by category).
The contents of directories generally come from webmasters submitting their own sites (usually providing not only their URL, but also a Title and Description that the directory can use). Most directories will have an editorial staff who manually review such submissions (and may refuse to accept some, or in some cases may edit them).
We we learn in here how you can improve your chances of being accepted into a directory,
You just need to follow these tips:
-Make sure your site is working and complete, before submitting.
(Many editors may reject your submission because your site takes a long time to load, or becasue that you have many broken links etc ..
Also, do not submit your site if you have pages under construction or so ..)
-Read any guidelines about submission published on the Directory site.
(Take five minutes to read editorial guidelines, you may tell me that you don\'t have the time because you have one hundred other directories on queue, remember, you are just submitting to well know and trusted directories .. You should not focus too much on directories submissions during your seo campaign so you need to choose carefully and do it the right way).
-Make sure the grammar and spelling of your submission is correct.
(This is crucial).
-Take a look at other sites listed in the directory, and trying to follow a similar style for your Title and Description.
-Most directories do not like hype-filled sales-pitches. Instead, you should concentrate on describing your site accurately and concisely.
(Don\'t use expression like \"The world\'s leading\" or \"The best resource\" etc etc ..).
Only submitting after you have done all of the above, then make sure you submit to the correct category.
The two best-known general directories on the web are without doubt Yahoo! and DMOZ (also known as The Open Directory).
As your probably already know, Yahoo!, provides visitors to its site with access to information from the directory, but for search results it also uses Spider-based results.(Being indexed in the Yahoo! directory gives you a real boost in the Yahoo! serp).
Submission to the Yahoo! directory is not free (and even if you pay, they do not guarantee that you be listed), so we recommend that you check out their site to see their current submission options and see if they are worth the money for you.
Submission to DMOZ is free, but they make no guarantees about whether your site will be accepted. DMOZ is staffed by volunteer editors so getting your site listed can take a long time (particularly if you submit to a category which doesn\'t currently have an editor - but you could also consider volunteering to edit that category).
DMOZ is the most important directory online, because their data has been made available for use by other web sites (Google directory is an adapted version of DMOZ directory, Alexa also and many others) - and you will find that many large and small sites do use it.
(Being indexed on DMOZ probably gives you a boost of PR1, or even PR2 if you have actually low PR)
As well as the big general directories on the web, there are also many smaller directories, and also niche subject-specific directories that you can submit to. Being listed in all these places, is important, not only for any traffic you get directly from them, but also because it can help your link popularity in the Spider-Based Search Engines.
So remember, it\'s not the quantity of directories that matters, it\'s the quality.
